Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is a detective agency in Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently books. It was founded by the eponymous Dirk Gently, the self-styled "holistic detective".

History[]

Dirk Gently founded Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, where he practises holistic detection. Its office was located at the address: 33a Peckender St., London N1 01-354 9112.

In Dirk Gently (BBC TV)[]

In the 2010 television series Dirk Gently, Dirk Gently founded the detective agency prior to the series. His secretary is Janice Pearce, and he recruits Richard MacDuff as his assistant.

In DGHDA (BBCA)[]

In the 2016 television series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Dirk Gently calls himself a holistic detective but hasn't jet founded the eponymous detective agency. He first recruited an unwilling Todd Brotzman as an assistant at the start of the Spring case.[1]

Dirk first properly articulated the idea of the detective agency and the name "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" (with the addition of "Cases Solved With Arguable Efficiency.") while in a car with Farah Black on the last day of the Spring case (in episode 1.06 Fix Everything).[2]

The next day, after the end of the Spring case, Farah Black brought up the subject of the detective agency again, stating her wish to invest in it; she had been gifted a fortune just that morning by Lydia Spring. Dirk accepted and he, Todd, and Farah made further plans on the venture. Their plans were interrupted by Project Blackwing's purge, who kidnapped Dirk and marked Todd and Farah as fugitives, forcing them to go on the run.[3][4]

Months later, after the end of the Bergsberg/Cardenas case, Dirk, Todd, and Farah finally founded their Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, admiring the large nameplate on the wall of their new office.[5]
