Dirk Gently's Holistic Wiki

Kate Schechter is a character in Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently books.

Early life[]

Kate Schechter is an American writer, doing travel articles for magazines. Kate has a brother, David, that works in publishing in New York.

She considers New York to be her home, but has lived in the city very little, spending time in faraway places like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Europe.

Kate married Luke. The marriage was short, as Luke was killed in a taxi-hailing accident in New York not long after. Afterwards, she saw therapist Alan Franklin for a few sessions, and also spent a "period of distracted wandering around South America".

Since losing her husband, Kate unfullfillingly dated "a succession of self-absorbed men", the latest of which was Jean-Philippe.

Five years after Luke's death (and/or her South America trip), shortly before the events of The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul, Kate was 30 or 30-odd years old and living in London.[1]

Kate loves pizza, and baths with oils, gels, crystals in them, and has a cat.

The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul[]

Kate appears in the The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. Planning a flight to Norway to meet Jean-Philippe, Kate encountered Thor at Heathrow Airport.

The Salmon of Doubt[]

Kate appears in The Salmon of Doubt.[2]
