Behind the scenes
- The character Professor Chronotis was originally created by Douglas Adams for the 1979 Doctor Who serial Shada. As the serial was never completed, Adams reused the character and plot elements to create the first Dirk Gently novel. In Shada, Chronotis was a Time Lord hiding out at a university on Earth, overall similar to his Dirk Gently incarnation, where he is a mysterious, equally long-lived university professor with a time machine.
